Tues May 22 Scrabble Championship '07 - Kiely Takes Title

The first ever High School Scrabble Championship was won yesterday by teacher D Kiely. In the final with Mr Gillanders Kiely got all the breaks, getting all four s's, both blanks, the z, j and q. However both men have decided that the prize money will be returned to the school in the form of funds for either sports equipment (table-tennis) or prize money (chess/scrabble/fantasy football). In all, 76 students entered the competition which was free to enter and took place during lunchtimes. Scrabble has now become a favourite pasttime of some students who continue to play at lunchtime in P1. Any student with web access should consider joining the Internet Scrabble Club (ISC). Just google ISC and follow the links - it's free.

The €20 prize for best individual word goes to 5th Year Brian McAree Murphy who came up with the excellent word 'yurt' which is a rudimentary tent where hide is tightly strung over a bamboo/wooden frame.

The highest scoring word was submitted by the eventual winner D Kiely who scored 85 for 'pension'.

Wed May 16th - Library Winners for World Book Week Competitions

Well done to the winners of the High School World Book Week competitions. The Senior Book Review competiton was won by TY student Sean Finnegan who reviewed Dan Browne's Digital Fortress , while the Junior Short Story winner was 1st Year Conor Smith whose story was entitled 'John and the Extraordinary Time Machine'. Also the Measly Medicine Quiz was won by 1st Year James Duffy. All the boys received Xtra Vision vouchers for their efforts. Thanks to Ms Sweeney for organizing the events.

Wed May 16th - Fantasy Football Champion

As expected the fantasy football competiton was this year won by teacher D Kiely. His encyclopediac knowledge of soccer coupled with an unerring tactical astuteness guaranteed him the first prize of €160. Amazingly, he also came in second place with a different team. In 3rd place was 6th Yr Barry Woods. However controversy erupted with the threat of the expulsion of Woods by the managing authority (D Kiely). It has transpired that, like Kiely, Woods entered two teams in the competiton but only paid for one. Kiely has therefore threatened to eliminate one of his teams, the 3rd placed one, much to the chagrin of the Woods and the delight of 4th placed Jonathon Tavey. Inside sources tell us that Kiely is just taunting Tavey and has no intention of giving him the money.

Wed May 16th - Scrabble Finalists Confirmed

It's Kiely V Gillanders in the inaugural final of the High School Scrabble Championship. Kiely advanced via a close 200 point victory over 5th Yr Brian McAree Murphy while Gillanders comprehensively trounced scrabble wannabee Mr Gillick. Gillanders goes into the competition hot favourite to take the €200 1st prize and Kiely will need lots of luck to even compete on the same level. Regardless, both finalists have agreed to put the prize money back into the school, possibly in the form of prize money for a table tennis competition in the next school year. There is a €20 prize for the best word submitted. Contenders include 'travail' (D Kiely), 'fezes' (Damien McClean) and 'yurt' (Brian McAree Murphy). The final will take place next Monday.

Thurs 28th September - Premiership Prizes Won

6th Yr student Shane McNally and 3rd Yr student Sean McGlew were the lucky winners of superb tickets to see Man Utd and Newcastle Utd play their Premiership game. McNally, with an impressive track record in jamminess, was ecstatic. Fighting back tears, he expressed his gratitude to the school, his parents, his dog Fluffy and the world at large. McGlew was much calmer, simply stating "It was meant to be. I am the special one."

Monday 18th September - Golfers draw with St McCartan's

Well done to Mr Scully's golf team who drew with a much-fancied St McCartan's on Friday last. The final score was 2-2 . The High School team consists of Caolan Duffy, Darragh McKenna, Raymond Mulholland and Eugene Smith. The next game in the Ulster Colleges Golf is against St Pat's Dungannon on Friday 22nd of September.

Friday September 15th - Win a Premiership Trip for 4!!

On Sunday 1st October Newcastle Utd will travel to Old Trafford (that is, if they have enough uninjured players to field a team) to play Manchester Utd. And you could be there too. Can you really afford to miss the chance of verbally abusing Ronaldo, Rooney and the sub-normal Gary Neville? I think not.

We have 2 packages to give away in our super Premiership draw. Both are for 1 adult and 3 children and include travel, accomodation and Grade A match tickets.

To be in with a shout, simply buy a line for €10 from the TY students who are visiting classes. You can enter as many times as you want.

The draw will take place on Wed 27th September at 3 p.m. All funds raised will be used for school activities.
