High School Basketballers Contest All Ireland Series

1st Year basketballers from the Patrician High School Carrickmacross travelled to
Canon Hayes Sports Centre in Clonmel last week to take part in the schools All Ireland
Play-Offs. They were drawn in a very tough group with well-established basketball schools
like Douglas, Cork and Colaiste Iognaid, Galway to be played.

First up was Douglas, Cork and early nerves were settled with baskets by Kevin O'Hanlon,
Ryan Thornton, Niall Loughman and Gerry Duffy. Douglas soon found their rhythm though
and by half time the High School's lead stood at only 3 points. The second half was a
nail-biting affair with Douglas launching some promising attacks but resolute defending
from Killian Rudden and Niall Loughman set up excellent scores from Kevin O'Hanlon and
Ryan Thornton. In the end, the High School just held out to claim a fantastic 25 - 24
victory.

With only an hour and a half break the Carrickmacross team were back on court, this time
against the highly fancied Colaiste Iognaid, Galway who had yet to play. They were
fresher and more energetic from the start and it wasn't long before the difference in
energy levels began to tell on the scoreboard. By half time the score stood at a
depressing 9 - 22 in favour of Galway. The Monaghan team gave their all in the second
half and clawed the score back to a respectable 23- 40 but in the end it was the Galway
team who progressed to the decider.

Coaches Sheila Quinn and Colm McEnaney spoke of their pride at the efforts of their young
charges, and the great style with which they reached this stage of the competition,
comprehensively beating St McCartan's in the Regional Final.

HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS!

Report from Northern Standard

All-Ireland Playoffs for Patrician Basketballers.

REPORT: The High School continued its remarkable progress in only it's second year
competing in 'C' Basketball by winning two games in the Phoenix Centre last week to
become Regional Champions and progress to the All Ireland Playoffs in Abbyleix in late
February.

In the first game of the Regional finals, the High School were pitted against Holy Child
School Sallynoggin. It was the Dublin school who made all the running in the first two
quarters with nerves obvious from the Carrickmacross side. The High school started by
playing man to man defence until the 3 point line but were unable to stop a strong
Sallynoggin No 9 winning all the rebounds and punishing them with well-taken scores.
However in the final two quarters the High School began to settle and gained confidence
with every passing minute and they soon began to look the better team. Some quick
thinking combined with deadly accuracy saw the scoreboard change dramatically and the
High School managed to finish the game as 34 to 28 winners.

This saw them through to the Regional final against the much-fancied CBS Belfast.
However the High School boys were now full of confidence and verve and were not about to
capitulate on home turf. Almost immediately Samuel Sanni scored and Conor Phelan
followed suit within seconds. From there on there was no turning back with John Farrell
and James McMahon combining to score some wonderful baskets. Despite Belfast playing
well, the High School just proved too strong and Peter O'Hanlon effectively finished the
game as a contest with two baskets early in the final quarter. The final score was 34 -
10 in favour of the High School.

The High School will now do their best to bring home an All Ireland Championship in
Abbeyleix on Saturday the 23rd of February.
