Patrician High School through to last Four
Patrician High School 0-11 St. Columbs (Derry) 0-7
Patrician High School caused something of a shock when the defeated St.Columbs of Derry in the Ulster quater final on Friday last in Cookstown. A tough intense game throughout the Carrickmacross side battled gamely to reach their first Ulster semi final in four years.
The first half produced some glorious football when the Patrician Boys threw themselves into battle and blitzed their Derry opponents and raced into a six points to zero lead with points from Barry Reilly(3); Keith McEnaney(2) and Joe Dillon(1). The Derry boys were out of luck when they missed several scoring chances, St. Columbs got their first score in the 20th minute and scored again to leave the score at half time 0-6 to 0-2. Before the breat Patrician missed to glorious goal chances which one from K. McEnaney hit the post after being released by Pauric Keenan.
The second half started with real intent from the St. Columbs boys and with the momentom with them they scored two points in succession. For the Patrician Killian Clarke & Darren Coleman were having to dig deep to battle in the middle of the park and suddenly B. Reilly tagged on another score for the High School. But increasing pressure from the Derry School ensured a grandstand finish and the forty-second minute they had hauled back the score to a tow point deficate, 0-9 to 0-7.
With Christy Burns outstanding in the full back line and J. Dillon & P. Keenan lively in attack the Farney School finished strongly with double All-Star Barry Reilly rallying the troops and with some final scores from D. Coleman and P. Keenan the Patrician yelled shouts of joy when the Tyrone Referee Eugene O'Connell sounded the fianl whistle.
The High School were back in the Ulster Colleges Semi Final.
Team Management of Mr. P. Martin and L. Keenan attended the last four draw and they now have to meet St. Micheals of Lurgan, the pre-tournament favorites.
Semi-Final will take place on Saturday 27th February...time and venue to follow.
